Uwe Protz, Division Manager Steel, TRADE

I buy and sell that material without which life on earth would be inconceivable for most people. From washing machines, pots, and lamp posts to tins, crown caps, and tubes – our everyday life cannot be imagined without steel.

The division I work in is, in a sense, endearingly out of place within the company. “Steel is different,” we say because CREMER’s roots actually lie in agriculture. On about 50 days in the year, I visit our customers in Africa and our suppliers anywhere in the world. Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana – I like being there not just because Africa is such a beautiful continent, but also because we maintain excellent business relations with partners in these countries. We supply sheet metal for the oil and gas industry and procure custom sheet metal for the manufacture of transformers and for the automotive industry. It doesn’t matter whether I get a large or a special order – my objective is always to buy high-quality steel for my customers at the most favourable price and just in time.

I was born in Hamburg. Well, as a real Hamburger, I am as firmly rooted in this city as is the family-owned company I work for. Mr Cremer is always there when you need him. “The door of my office is always open to every employee,” he says and that’s not just an empty phrase: he really means it. Where else can you find such an attitude?
